 Founded in 1990 by three leading progressive intellectuals and policy experts – Robert Reich (later Secretary of Labor in the Clinton Administration), Robert Kuttner and Paul Starr – The American Prospect has evolved over its 15 years from liberalism’s most authoritative policy journal to a full-service liberal monthly, which has added in-depth political and social reporting and cultural commentary to its policy analyses. Recent Prospect articles widely cited in the press include Linda Hirshman’s reappraisal of feminism, Will Bunch’s expose of Republican Senator Rick Santorum’s dubious personal finances, and Mark Goldberg’s story on the butcher of Darfur who’s also a CIA asset. “Tapped,” the Prospect’s blog, is considered among the smartest and most liberal weblogs in the land, featuring such stellar young talents as Garance Franke-Ruta and Matt Yglesias.
In 2001, the magazine moved its editorial operations from Boston to Washington, DC, as Kuttner stepped down from day-to-day editing and Harold Meyerson, moving east from Los Angeles, took the reins. Today, the magazine is edited by former New York Magazine political editor Michael Tomasky, and Meyerson, as editor-at-large, authors a wide range of pieces. In the current April issue, he has a major piece on the problems of the economy in the era of outsourcing, which asks the question: Can America survive American capitalism?

Michael Bloomberg has declined to endorse anyone in the race to succeed him as New York’s mayor. Neither Democrat Bill de Blasio, whose entire campaign is a critique of Bloomberg’s tenure in office, nor Republican Joseph Lhota, who is trailing de Blasio by a mind-boggling 50 points and who has been heard disparaging Bloomberg to boot, has endeared himself to the billionaire mayor.

The three buildings arrayed around the central fountain at New York’s Lincoln Center are, north to south, Avery Fisher Hall, the Metropolitan Opera House, and the David H. Koch Theater. Avery Fisher was a radio and sound reproduction technologist who amassed a fortune from his hi-fi ventures in the mid-20th century, and donated a vast sum of money to the New York Philharmonic, which today performs in his eponymous auditorium. The Metropolitan Opera is the Metropolitan Opera. And David Koch is the same David Koch who is financing the destruction of the United States as we know it.

John Boehner apparently will let the debt ceiling rise, even if he has to rely on Democratic votes to do it. This is both good news and bad news.
It’s good news because we won’t have a global financial panic in two weeks time. Boehner apparently got Wall Street’s message loud and clear: If you make the United States government default on its debts, you take responsibility for a worldwide economic catastrophe.

The American press has widely reported on German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s nickname: “Mutti,” which translates to “Mommy.” Less noted is her second nickname, which is also familial but decidedly less affectionate: “The Black Widow.” She has earned this second sobriquet because she kills her partners with whom she governmentally cohabits.

It’s been a good week for the nation’s numerous poverty-wage workers. They’ve been way overdue for a good week.
On Tuesday, the Labor Department issued a much anticipated and delayed extension of the federal minimum wage and overtime regulations to the nation’s 2 million homecare workers. Last Thursday, the California legislature passed (and Governor Jerry Brown pledged to sign) a bill that raised the mega-state’s minimum wage from $8-an-hour to $10.

The AFL-CIO held its national convention in California last week, and it turns out it couldn’t have picked a better time to be there. For it was last week that California really began to deliver on the promise of the labor-Latino alliance.
On Thursday, with the legislature rushing to meet its targeted adjournment date on Friday, it passed a bill raising the state’s hourly minimum wage from $8 to $10—the highest in the nation. It passed a bill permitting undocumented immigrants to get driver's licenses. Governor Jerry Brown has committed to sign both bills. It also passed a bill mandating overtime pay for domestic workers, and, for good measure, outlawed the sale of rifles with detachable magazines and required owners of such rifles to register them with the state. And perhaps just as remarkably, on Thursday, 15 Republican members of the state legislature announced their support for federal immigration reform, including legalization of the undocumented.
